This is a letter to the parents. Everyday, transgender and gender nonconforming children bare discrimination and emotional and physical abuse because of their identity and how they express it. Forty one percent of children who are treated negatively or lack support from their families attempt suicide in their lifetimes. This is nearly nine times the average of heterosexual and cisgender teen suicides. Suicide attempts of trans and LGBT youth with supportive families are far less common. Their relationships with their families were healthier, leading to a happy child who can express themselves openly without fear of being judged or hurt. If your child comes out, it is extremely important to show them love and support. If you deny your child this essential kindness, it can lead to intense emotional damage or even suicide. Parents of transgender or LGBT children who are supportive of their children can lead to greater confidence and a brighter future.
Which means society needs an update on what it really means to be transgender.
